Barley & Hops Craft Candles Owners
Meet Your Makers

Uber successful small town business owner meets risk-taking creative maven.

It all started in a pre-Civil War small Missouri town. Marsha Flowers, 5B&CO. Candlemakers small business owner was never in it for the money. Creative freedom and expression came to her in pure wax form. Discovering unique and inspiring scent combinations was her gift. For nearly 20 years, Weston, Missouri main street was her town of choice. Nestled amongst a variety of shops, restaurants, a brewery, a distillery, Irish pub, wineries, and yearly festivals was where Marsha & her candle shop fit in best.

Daily, visitors like Carrie Atkins (award-winning Kansas City designer & entrepreneur) still flock to this charming small town to continue old family traditions and make new memories. This is Carrie Atkins met Marsha. From the very first day they met, their creative synergy was undeniable.

In 2014, she closed her retail store and concentrated on trying to stay semi-retired with her husband, Jack Flowers. Fortunately, candle making is Marsha’s Prozac and she couldn’t let it go.

In 2016, Marsha and Carrie decided it was time to put their creative synergy to work.

Why Craft Beer Scents?

How it all started, they still are not quite sure. They do know that they both have a passion for artisan brew and local breweries. One night, over quite a few craft beers, the duo discussed the possibility of making a candle that smelled like a craft brew. At their next meeting, they both brought along a few of their favorite craft beers. This time, they set their intentions on the brew’s aroma. It was agreed that the candles would have to compliment the more pleasing aromas and leave behind a lot of the “beer” smell. After all, the candles had to smell amazing! What the duo has brought to the table is a completely new and exciting candle collection that captures the unique scent combinations found in artisan beer.

Do Brewery Candles Smell Good?

For those of you who assume our candles do not smell good, you are totally and completely wrong. We aren’t mad.  Before we even made our first artisan brewery candle, we had many discussions about how the general public might perceive our candles. We knew it would be a challenge, but as we saw it, the world was ready for a new genre of candles.

The easiest way for us to describe how this collection of artisan brewery candles smell is this. Take some time to visit your local brewery. When you get there, ask to see their beer menu. Read the descriptions. THIS is how our artisan brewery candles smell.

Read a few of the craft beer descriptions a few of our local breweries have on tap.

Boulevard Brewing Company, Cranberry Orange Radler.
Beautifully hazy and slightly pink in color, Cranberry Orange Radler will open with an aroma of sweet blood oranges and just a hint of cranberry. The blood orange character boldly manifests in the flavor giving way to cranberry tartness. The base beer, Unfiltered Wheat Beer, contributes a slightly sweet bready flavor to the malt profile of the beer that shines with bright citrus flavor and a touch of acidity.

Odell Brewing Company, Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout.
Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout is brewed with milk sugar and milk chocolate. The rich and creamy brew reminds us of a cold glass of chocolate milk, and our hometown “Aggie” roots.

Mark Twain Brewery, Halley’s Blueberry Saison
Our version of this classic Belgian style is slightly sweet but ultimately thirst-quenching. The use of French Saison yeast adds hints of citrus fruit, Chardonnay grapes, cloves, and black pepper, giving balance to the biscuity, sweet flavors of the malt bill. To enhance the natural fruitiness of the style, we add fresh blueberries during primary fermentation.

What makes Barley & Hops Craft Candles unique?

Artisan DefinitionOur brewery candles are unlike ANY other candle you have very had the pleasure to burn.

  • Apricot wax. Apricot wax is the purest form of wax available on the market. It is soft, silky, clean and slow burning. Hot and cold scent throw and is excellent.  It has a smooth surface & burns cooler so it burns longer.
  • Unique scent combinations. Brewery candles are a new. We wanted something new. As much as we love botanicals, essential oils and vanilla candles, we were ready for something entirely different. We get it. Not all beers smell good. The craft brews we choose to scent match are of the finest quality and grade. They come from craft breweries. They have aromas such as hazelnut, malt, chocolate, espresso, hops, fruit and so much more. The ingredient combinations you find in artisan brews cannot be found anywhere else.  We thank the breweries we work with for introducing us to such amazing marriages of aroma.
  • Artisan candles.  You will find many candle companies that consider themselves “artisans.” I respect that and love my fellow artisans. We have yet to find any other candle company as artisan as ours. Marsha, our beloved candle-maker, has been scent-match, scent-creating, and scent-defining for over 25 years. I dare say she is a true “scent-master.”
  • Hip & cool. Yep, they are. Really? Brewery candles? Duh.
  • Support your local breweries. One of the best parts about working with local breweries is working with local breweries! We visit breweries all day. We sample locally brewed artisan beers. We sniff artisan beer. We get to get on with some of the coolest people you will ever meet. We are proud to support them and get the word out about how amazing craft beer is. We are also very thankful that local breweries trust to work with us! Got to say…the publicity for us isn’t half-bad either!
